A drawing can tell us exactly what a customer wants made. It can give us dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, finishes, and just about everything else we need to manufacture the part.
What it cannot always tell us is why.
That came up recently while we were reviewing a part for a customer. The drawing called for .1875 inch 304 stainless steel, and there was nothing unusual about the specification itself.
The problem showed up when we looked at the material required to make it.
For the quantity being ordered, purchasing that particular sheet was going to have a significant impact on the unit price. We could have simply updated the quote to reflect the higher material cost and sent it along.
Technically, there would have been nothing wrong with doing that.
But before we made the part more expensive, we decided to ask a question.
Would 7 GA 304 stainless work for the application?
If the answer was no, that was perfectly fine. We would manufacture the part according to the original specification and price it accordingly.
But if the answer was yes, there was an opportunity to avoid adding cost that may not have provided any additional value to the customer.
There Is a Difference Between a Specification and an Application
This is one of the reasons communication matters so much in custom metal fabrication.
We know how we're going to manufacture the part. Our customer knows what that part ultimately needs to do. When those two perspectives come together, sometimes opportunities become visible that neither side would see independently.
That doesn't mean a fabricator should start changing materials or specifications because something else is cheaper.
Absolutely not.
It means that when we notice an alternative worth considering, we should bring it to the customer's attention and let them make the decision.
Sometimes the answer will be no. The specified material may be necessary for strength, fit, corrosion resistance, certification, or another requirement that isn't obvious from our side of the project.
Other times, the customer may tell us the alternative is perfectly acceptable.
Either answer gives us what we need to move forward confidently.
The Quote Doesn't Have to Be the Beginning of the Conversation
There is a tendency in manufacturing to think of quoting as a fairly straightforward exchange. A customer sends a drawing. The manufacturer calculates what it will cost to produce. The customer gets a number.
Real manufacturing is rarely that tidy.
Material availability changes. Quantities affect purchasing. Processes that make sense for one production run may not make sense for another. Sometimes a specification that worked perfectly well on the last order becomes considerably more expensive the next time around.
Those are the moments when a little communication can make a difference.
Our responsibility is still to manufacture what our customer asks us to manufacture. But when we see something that deserves a second look, we believe it's worth asking the question.
Not every question leads to a change.
Sometimes it simply confirms that the original specification is exactly what the customer needs.
That's valuable too.
Because the goal isn't to find the cheapest way to make a part.
It's to understand what the customer needs, manufacture it correctly, and avoid adding cost when a better option may be sitting right in front of us.
Sometimes that starts with nothing more complicated than asking.
